My completed painting – an abstract with lots of red – 183 x 122 cm, on canvas, on a stretcher, stood propped up against my partitioned studio wall at Byam Shaw. But I wasn’t happy with it, fretted over it, sat impatiently in front of it in the hope that it would tell me what to do. But it refused to yield up any information, so finally one day I turned it back to front. And as I did so, I noticed several threads dangling loosely from the bottom right hand side of the canvas.

At that precise moment I decided to unthread the whole painting.

Beginning a process that was to evolve over a period of twelve months.
